Man 'threatened to burn down Belfast Lidl store and kill the manager'

Man ‘threatened to burn down Belfast Lidl store and kill the manager’

A man allegedly threatened to burn down a supermarket and kill the manager after eating food and drink from the shelves, the High Court has heard.

John Caskey is also accused of assaulting members of staff who confronted him last month at the Lidl store in Belfast city centre.

The 49-year-old faces charges of threats to kill and to damage property endangering life, common assault, attempted theft, criminal damage and possessing Class C drugs.

Prosecutors claimed Caskey was observed on June 24 eating and drink in the shop on High Street without making any attempt to pay for them.
When approached by staff, other food allegedly concealed on him fell to the ground.

Crown lawyer Mark Conlon claimed a security guard was then splashed with liquid from a jar as Caskey became verbally and physically abusive.

The defendant then allegedly assaulted two staff and kicked out at the entrance doors during attempts to escort him from the supermarket.

Mr Conlon added: “He also allegedly threatened to kill the store manager and threatened to burn the premises down.”

Police arrested Caskey after tracking his movements on CCTV street cameras. A quantity of Pregabalin tablets found on him in custody were for self-medication, the court heard.

The accused told police he had no memory of the incident but insisted that any threats were not meant.

Despite being listed as having no fixed abode, Caskey was seeking bail to live at an address in Belfast.

Defence barrister Turlough Madden outlined a “depressing” background of difficulties his client has experienced.

But adjourning the application, Lord Chief Justice Sir Declan Morgan stressed a package of support must be available before Caskey could be considered for release.
