Varane deal ‘a sign of Man Utd’s aims’
Darren Fletcher ‘swayed’ Raphael Varane to sign for Manchester United as the club negotiated with the centre-half.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men completed one of the most impressive deals this summer as they signed the French defender for £35million from Real Madrid.
It’s a shrewd bit of business from the Red Devils as they now have a World Cup champion and four-time Champions League winner among their ranks to partner Harry Maguire at the back.
Throw in the signing of Jadon Sancho who arrived from Borussia Dortmund for £73m and all of a sudden, United are looking like genuine Premier League title contenders.

And the figures behind the scenes deserve to take the credit for managing to secure players of that calibre, especially Fletcher who had a major say in getting the deal for Varane over the line, according to ESPN.
The technical director, alongside director of football John Murtough, spoke to the 28-year-old to sell him on the move to Old Trafford as the pair took charge of talks while departing chief executive Ed Woodward was on a family holiday.
And Varane was particularly ‘swayed’ by former United midfielder Fletcher as he would seal a four-year deal, with an option of a fifth, at the club.
Fletcher and Murtough have only been in their new roles since March, but they’re already having a massive impact in regards to recruitment.
The signing of Sancho might have been fairly straightforward as the England winger only had eyes for United, but there was still a sense of relief to end a saga that had gone on for over a year.
But Varane was a different story and Fletcher made his presence felt in proceedings by convincing him Manchester was the best landing spot.

United decided to overhaul their operations in the hope that Murtough and Fletcher’s redefined roles would put a clear structure in place with less overlap for each individual, as well as the ability for them to work in tandem with Solskjaer.
And it seems they’re already reaping the rewards as the additions of Sancho and Varane puts them in great shape ahead of the new campaign.
Promoting Fletcher could be one of their best decisions, however, and is primed to be the club’s secret weapon on the transfer front, like he was with Varane.
