A Belfast restaurant has said staff “should not be reduced to tears” for doing their job.
The comments from Shed Bistro on the Ormeau Road come as they posted “a polite reminder of some rules and regulations” due to restaurant licensing.
The business said they cannot serve alcohol to guests without having a “substantial meal”, and that under 18s cannot be in the restaurant after 9pm.
The restaurant asked those “angry” about these rules, to not get “abusive” or “shout” at their hardworking team.
A full statement posted by Shed Bistro on social media read: “We wish to take this opportunity to remind customers of a few rules that we must adhere to under our restaurant license.
“The Licensing (Northern Ireland) Order 1996 and the trading licence which we operate under states that alcohol may only be sold: ‘for consumption and is consumed – as ancillary to a main table meal.’
“This means we cannot serve alcohol to guests unless they are having a substantial meal. Even if someone decides to join your party for a drink, they too can only be served alcohol which accompanies a substantial meal.
“While we agree this limits what we can offer to some guests and we really wish we could accommodate everyone, we still must abide by the law.
“Additionally, guests under the age of 18 are not allowed to be in the restaurant after 9pm. By law, under 18s must not be on a licensed premises after this time, even if accompanied by an adult.”

It added: “Other establishments may operate under different licences, so you may find that rules differ from restaurant to restaurant. To view the full legal guidelines placed on us, please see the Standard Operating Procedure on display at the front door of our premises.
“To those who are angry about this fact, we ask you to refrain from getting abusive and shouting at our hardworking team. They are trying their best to provide you with the best dining experience possible and should not be reduced to tears due to your dissatisfaction.
“We are sorry if you are disappointed, but we are not in the business of breaking the law. We work too hard to put our livelihood and the livelihoods of our staff at risk.
“Luckily for us, the Ormeau Road is awash with plenty of fantastic pubs and bars which we would be happy to recommend if our rules don’t suit your needs on this occasion. Hopefully you can join us another time if this is the case!”
